All in a day's work!
Guess how many hopeful Singaporeans turned up for the ST 160th anniversary Mazda-6 draw on Saturday morning?? The mysterious location of the car (worth $85 988 without COE), revealed in a cryptic 4 line riddle probably made many feel as if they'd solved the Da Vinci Code - "Where the sun rises by the sea, from seven to eleven Ronald eyes a perfect game."
Sour grapes or not, I pieced the riddle in a matter of minutes (the ST reported readers who planned all night vigils) but left for East Coast 45 minutes before the 11.30am deadline. 11.15am - I was still stuck at Marine Parade as the neverending flow of traffic swirled around my Dad's car. I prayed for a big bird (a real animal or a helicopter would do). 11.25am - Jam on the ECP flyover, people were getting out of their cars and running towards Mac's. Dad had the smart idea of dropping me along the main road, parallel to Mac's...except that Mac's was in the opposite direction. Still clutching the entry form, by then all creased and re-folded into various shapes, I was all for going home but Dad's legendary perseverance came out in full force and we found ourselves joining the queue of honking cars. 12 noon - finally reached Mac's in time for the winners to be announced. I watched, amazed as people were still arriving, waving their entry forms with a crazed look in their eyes. 6 000 people descended upon that tiny stage at Marina Cove that morning with their kids, grandparents and pets in tow, all fervently drooling over the Mazda-6. Ironically, it went to a 34 year old lady who had bought a Mazda-3 a week ago. Sigh. What does it say about us Singaporeans? The "never-say-die" attitude or the "got nothing-better-to-do" syndrome on weekends?
An afternoon of recuperation and I was off to Somika's for her kids' birthday party - daughter Arshia and son Ayush turned 5 and 1 on the same day :) Managed to catch up with Aarti, whom I had not seen since she left TLL and who is now expecting a baby boy in September!
Yet another birthday celebration - I joined my cousins at The Wine Company (somewhere inside ulu Dempsey Road) for drinks. One of 3 new wine places to open in the area, wines are sold at cheaper retail prices. Four bottles (wines were from NZ to South Africa to Spain and finally Australia - my little contribution!) and one yummy mushroom & cheese thin-crust pizza later, we waltzed out...contented in our shared history and giggling happily.
